Two of the biggest beauty titles ranked Korean cleansing oils this year and picked different winners. Allure gave best overall to ma:nyo’s Pure Soybean Cleansing Oil, which costs $17. Marie Claire’s editors gave the same title to Sulwhasoo’s Gentle Cleansing Oil at $40.

Both are good oils, and only one of them needs to cost forty dollars. That gap is the whole problem with this category: most round-ups rank on brand reputation rather than on what the ingredient list actually says.

So we read all nine ingredient lists against independent cosmetic databases instead of the box copy, then checked each one against the brand’s own price and size disclosures. Five of the nine turned out to be genuinely fragrance-free. Nobody paid to be here, and two magazine-endorsed picks get a fragrance correction further down.

We started from those two round-ups, cross-checked them against retailer ratings and the names that recur in r/AsianBeauty and r/kbeauty, then checked every product three ways.

First, the ingredient list. Each formula was read at INCI level rather than off the box, which is how two picks widely listed as fragrance-free turned out to carry the two most commonly declared allergens.

Second, the name on the bottle. ma:nyo now sells two oils under near-identical names, so a fair share of the reviews online describe a product you may not be buying.

Third, the live price: our three sources quoted $17, $18 and $23 for that same ma:nyo bottle, so every figure here comes from the brand’s own store or a national retailer on the day of writing rather than an article’s snapshot.

What do the best Korean cleansing oils cost?

Expect $17 to $26 for the mainstream picks, with one luxury outlier at $40. The spread inside that range is mostly bottle size and brand positioning rather than performance: the cheapest oil cleanser on this list is also the one editors cite most often.

Bottle size matters as much as the sticker price, and it reorders the list. Priced per 100ml the 300ml Hanskin is the cheapest here at $8.30 despite having one of the higher sticker prices, just ahead of the ma:nyo at $8.50.

The Haruharu looks mid-range at $25 but works out at $16.67 per 100ml, double the Hanskin, because the bottle holds only 150ml. Sulwhasoo is the outlier either way at $20.00.

1ma:nyo Pure Soybean Cleansing Oil: Best Overall

This is the oil that shows up first almost everywhere, and it is the cheapest on the list. Allure names it best overall in its Korean cleansing oil guide, and Marie Claire quotes a dermatologist calling it “probably the number one in Korea”.

One thing to get right before you buy: ma:nyo sells more than one cleansing oil. The classic is now labelled Pure Soybean Cleansing Oil, and there is a separate Pure Cleansing Oil Deep Clean alongside it.

They are different products, and the split runs right through the sources: Allure gives best overall to the Pure Cleansing Oil, while Hwahae ranks the Deep Clean variant first across 46,040 user reviews. The reviews you read are not always about the bottle you are buying. Olive Young US lists the 200ml soybean bottle at $17, which is the one to look for.

One caveat that the round-ups miss. Allure lists this as fragrance-free, but the published ingredient list ends with lavender, orange and tea tree oils, then limonene and linalool.

Those oils are doing a job: “its tea tree and melaleuca oils help combat oily skin and bacterial overgrowth, making it great for people with blackheads and whiteheads,” dermatologist Justine Park told Allure. There is no added parfum, which is why the label claim stands, but limonene and linalool are the components most often declared as fragrance allergens.

It rinses clean and works as a default for most people. If your skin reacts to scent, take the SKIN1004 or the Purito instead.

It is worth noting that Allure’s write-up says four oils and the brand’s own page says six, so the brand’s list is the one we have used.

The texture is thinner than most, which is the point. If richer oils leave you feeling coated, this is the one that tends not to. The 200ml bottle runs about $19, and there is a 30ml travel size for around $5.50 if you want to try it first.

Best for: acne-prone and reactive skin, and anyone who finds richer oils leave a film behind. Price: around $18.90 for 200ml, with a 30ml travel size at about $5.50.

3Purito From Green Cleansing Oil: Best for Sensitive Skin

This is the shortest ingredient list here by some distance. Allure picks it for sensitive skin and calls the formula ultra-minimalist. The published ingredient list runs to eleven entries, built on olive, sunflower seed, jojoba, sweet almond and grape seed oils, with no fragrance or parfum among them.

Purito lists the 200ml bottle at $21 and sells a refill pouch alongside it, which is rare in this category and worth knowing if you settle on one oil long term.

There is no fragrance here, and no essential oil quietly doing the job of one. That is the distinction that matters if scent is what your skin reacts to. Where the Round Lab further down carries limonene and linalool despite being described as fragrance-free, this one genuinely has neither.

Best for: sensitive and easily reactive skin, and anyone filtering on the shortest ingredient list. Price: $21 for 200ml, with a refill pouch sold alongside it.

4Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil: Best for Mature Skin

Beauty of Joseon builds its range around hanbang, the traditional Korean herbal tradition, and ginseng is its signature.

The stars, according to Justine Park in Allure, are “glycine soja (soybean) oil, which melts makeup while giving mature skin nourishing omegas, as well as ginseng seed oil for natural antioxidant power.” That is why this one gets pointed at mature skin.

The brand describes it as using micellar technology so it emulsifies cleanly rather than needing to be wiped off, and lists it at $20 for 210ml, the largest mainstream bottle here apart from the Hanskin.

Anua sells the 200ml bottle directly for $22. Olive Young US carries the same size for slightly less, so it is worth comparing before you buy.

The one caveat is scent. This is not a fragrance-free formula, and reviewers do mention a light smell. If you are reactive, the ma:nyo or SKIN1004 picks are the safer starting point.

Justine Park, quoted in the same guide, puts it plainly: “the addition of hyaluronic acid and ceramides helps soothe dry, sensitive skin while adding hydration as it cleanses.”

One correction worth making: Allure marks this fragrance-free, but Round Lab’s own page lists bergamot oil and salvia oil as the scent for the 200ml bottle at $26. Both statements are technically accurate, because the formula carries no added parfum.

Sulwhasoo lists the 200ml bottle around its Hydra Capture Complex and positions it for removing waterproof makeup while keeping skin hydrated. Allure adds mulberry leaf extract, mountain yam extract and coconut oil to the ingredient picture.

It is not fragrance-free. Buy it if you want the texture and the ritual and dry skin is your main complaint. If you want the cleanest possible ingredient story for the money, the SKIN1004 does more with less.

Cleansing oil or cleansing balm?

They do the same job in the routine. Both are oil-based first cleansers, both dissolve sunscreen and makeup, and both emulsify with water. The difference is the format and what it suits.

An oil cleanser is liquid in the bottle and spreads fast, which makes it quicker over a full face and easier to work around the eyes. A balm is solid until body heat melts it, which makes it less likely to spill, better for travel and usually a little more cushioned on dry skin.
