We read the full published ingredient list for every balm, recorded which ones carry fragrance or scented oils, and checked each price against the brand’s own US store or a named US retailer on the same day. We did not test these on skin. Our method is set out in full in how we review.

Sizes are quoted in the unit the brand prints on the jar. Five of these are sold in millilitres and three in grams. The two are not interchangeable for a solid balm, so the per-unit column compares like with like only within each unit.

One thing worth saying before the picks. Prices in this category move a lot. Three of the eight were on promotion on 12 September 2026, two of them heavily, so check the current figure before you buy.

What is a cleansing balm?

A cleansing balm is a solid oil-based cleanser that melts into an oil on contact with skin. It is the first step of a double cleanse, used to dissolve makeup, sunscreen and the day’s sebum, after which a water-based cleanser removes whatever the balm leaves behind.

Being solid is the point. A balm spills less than an oil and is easier to control around the eyes, which is where most of the work happens.

What the balm is built on varies more than the category suggests. Banila Co leads on the synthetic esters ethylhexyl palmitate and cetyl ethylhexanoate. Others lead on plant oils, and that choice is what separates the lighter formulas here from the richer ones.

Balms come in jars rather than bottles, which is why size matters more in this category than in most. The eight here hold 50ml to 120ml, and one brand on this page sells the same balm in both.

What do Korean cleansing balms cost per millilitre?

Between 11 cents and 48 cents. Sticker prices run $11.40 to $39, a spread of 3.4 times. Per millilitre the spread is 4.4 times, because the cheapest balms come in the biggest jars and the dearest come in the smallest.

The clearest example of why the jar matters sits inside one brand. Heimish sells the same All Clean Balm in two sizes, and the 50ml jar is $12 while the 120ml jar is $13. One dollar more buys nearly two and a half times the product.

Round Lab and Dr.Althea sit at the top of the per-millilitre table for the same reason in reverse. Both hold 50ml. Neither is expensive on the shelf, and both are among the dearest here by volume.

1Banila Co Clean It Zero Original: Best Overall

This is the balm the category is measured against. It is built on ethylhexyl palmitate and cetyl ethylhexanoate rather than plant oils, with onsen-sui and lithospermum root extract, and it melts from a sorbet texture into an oil on contact.

Allure names it the best Korean cleanser for waterproof makeup, and Y. Claire Chang, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at UnionDerm in New York City, told the magazine she reaches for the Calming version at night to take off “all the dirt, makeup, and oil that accumulated throughout the day.” Charlotte Cho, the Soko Glam cofounder, adds that a little scoop goes a long way.

One caveat the reviews rarely mention. Its published ingredient list includes Fragrance, in eleventh place of twenty-two. If you want this formula without it, the brand sells several variants and their ingredient lists differ.

At $21 for 100ml it works out at 21 cents per millilitre, which is the middle of this group. Soko Glam also carries a 180ml jar at $29, which brings it down to 16 cents.

Best for: heavy or waterproof makeup, if fragrance is not a problem for you. Price: $21 for 100ml at Soko Glam.

2Purito From Green Avocado Cleansing Balm: Best Fragrance-Free

Purito builds this one on avocado oil, watermelon seed oil and baobab seed oil, with kale, spinach and broccoli extracts underneath. The whole list runs to sixteen ingredients and none of them is fragrance, parfum or a scented essential oil.

That makes it the cleanest label in this group alongside Dr.Althea and haruharu wonder. Only Dr.Althea’s fourteen is shorter, which matters if you are working out what your skin reacts to. 3Heimish All Clean Balm: Best Value

Eleven cents per millilitre is the lowest figure in this round-up, and the 120ml jar is the largest. Shea butter, donkey milk and a long run of flower and fruit extracts sit behind the cleansing base.

The name invites a reasonable assumption that turns out to be wrong. It contains no ingredient called fragrance, but its published ingredient list carries nine aromatic oils: orange peel, lavender, amyris bark, grapefruit peel, eucalyptus, tea tree, juniper, frankincense and bergamot.

That is the most of any balm here by a wide margin. It does not make the product bad, and plenty of people use it happily. It does make it the wrong first choice if aromatic oils are what your skin reacts to.

Watch the size when you buy. The 50ml jar is $12 and the 120ml jar is $13, so the small one costs more than twice as much per millilitre for the sake of a dollar.

4Dr.Althea Pure Grinding Cleansing Balm: Best for Sensitive Skin

Fourteen ingredients, no fragrance, no scented oils, and centella running through the middle of the list as madecassoside, centella asiatica extract and asiaticoside. Camellia seed oil and grape seed oil do the dissolving.

The packaging is the part people talk about. A dial mechanism grinds out a measured ribbon of balm rather than asking you to dig in with fingers or a spatula, which keeps the rest of the jar untouched.

The cost is the trade. At $22.90 for 50ml it is 46 cents per millilitre, more than four times Heimish. Ulta lists it at the same price. You are paying roughly Banila Co money for half the jar.

Best for: reactive skin, and anyone who dislikes fingers in a jar. Price: $22.90 for 50ml on Dr.Althea’s US store.

5haruharu wonder Centella Sunflower Makeup-Melting Cleansing Balm: Best for Dry Skin

Sunflower seed oil unsaponifiables at a stated 5,000ppm sit second on the list, with argan kernel oil, shea butter, jojoba and squalane behind them. Unsaponifiables are the fraction of an oil that does not turn to soap, and they are used here for barrier support rather than for cleansing power.

Its twenty-ingredient list carries no fragrance and no scented oils. The oils in it are carriers, not perfume.

At $22 for 100g it is 22 cents per gram, and it was not discounted on the day we checked. That is worth noting in a category where three of eight were.

Best for: dry or barrier-stressed skin that still needs makeup off. Price: $22 for 100g on haruharu wonder’s US store.

6Beauty of Joseon Radiance Cleansing Balm: Best on a Budget

Rice bran water and rice extracts sit under a standard cleansing base, and beeswax gives it a firmer set than most balms here. That beeswax also means it is not vegan.

Its ingredient list puts Fragrance seventh of twenty-four, which is high up for a scent ingredient. Beauty of Joseon does not market this one as fragrance-free, so the label is doing what it says.

Check the price before you buy. The brand’s US store listed it at $11.40 against a regular price of $19.00 on 12 September 2026, which is a 40 percent cut. At the sale figure it is 11 cents per millilitre and the joint cheapest here. At the regular figure it is 19 cents and sits mid-table.

Best for: the lowest sticker price, when it is discounted. Price: $11.40 for 100ml on the brand’s US store, regular $19.00.

7Then I Met You Living Cleansing Balm: Best Splurge

Olive fruit oil leads this one, followed by grape seed oil, sea buckthorn and babassu. That is a genuinely oil-led formula rather than an ester base with oils added, and it is the reason the texture is closer to a balm-to-oil melt than a sorbet.

It carries no fragrance or parfum, but it does carry three scented oils: rosewood, grapefruit peel and rosemary leaf. Fewer than Heimish, more than none.

At $39 for 90g it is 43 cents per gram and the most expensive sticker in this round-up. The brand also sells a 20g travel size at $15, which works out at 75 cents per gram and is the worst value of any size on this page.

Best for: people who want an olive-oil-led balm and will pay for it. Price: $39 for 90g on the brand’s US store.

8Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleansing Balm: Most Transparent Label

Sea water sits alongside sunflower, evening primrose, grape seed and meadowfoam oils, which is the same Dokdo water the brand builds its toners and cleansing oil around. The list names limonene and linalool outright, alongside bergamot and sage oils.

Limonene and linalool oxidise on contact with air, and the oxidation products are what most people react to. A Lund University analysis of 5,773 patch-tested patients found 7.0% reacted to oxidised linalool and 5.1% to oxidised limonene. A balm sits in a wide jar you open nightly for months.

That declaration is the reason it is here. Every balm on this page that carries aromatic oils also carries the allergens those oils bring, but Round Lab is the only one that prints them as their own line items instead of leaving you to work it out from the botanical names.

Which of these are actually fragrance-free?

Three of the eight. Purito, Dr.Althea and haruharu wonder carry no fragrance, no parfum and no scented essential oils anywhere in their published lists.

Two are straightforward about it. Banila Co and Beauty of Joseon both print Fragrance in the ingredients, and neither markets itself as fragrance-free, so nothing is being hidden.

The other three are where the label and the list diverge, and the gap sits inside the word itself. A product can be called fragrance-free as long as nothing in it is named fragrance or parfum, and essential oils never are. Lavender oil appears as lavender oil. Bergamot appears as bergamot. Both scent the product and neither one breaks the claim.

Heimish is the clearest case. Nine aromatic oils sit in its list, and the product is called All Clean Balm. Then I Met You carries three. Round Lab carries two plus the declared allergens.

None of this makes those three bad balms. It makes the fragrance-free label a poor filter for the reader who reaches for a cleansing balm precisely because it should be gentle.

Should you buy a balm or a cleansing oil?

Buy the one you will not spill. That is the honest short answer, because the cleansing work is much the same.

A balm is solid until body heat melts it, which makes it less likely to tip over and easier to control around the eyes. An oil pumps out as a liquid, which makes it quicker over a full face and easier to use in the shower.

Start with what your skin has reacted to before, not with the marketing. If aromatic oils have caused you trouble, three of these eight are clean and the other five are not, and the label will not tell you which is which.

Then check the jar size against the price. A balm lasts months, so a 120ml jar at 11 cents and a 50ml jar at 48 cents are not the same purchase even when the stickers look close.
